Make-a-Wish has been a highlight of my college career. I had always heard about the program growing up, but I never had an opportunity to be a part of it. As I started college, I kept hearing about the different ways to get involved in Make-a-Wish. My first experience was in Indianapolis in 2018 at the annual gala held to raise money for life-changing wishes. It was a great first step into the large organization. I was able to hear from the children and how the money raised during this one night gives several children the opportunity of a lifetime. I immediately knew I needed to join Make-a-Wish as a wish granter.
By the summer of 2019, I was able to complete all of the required training and begin my search for a wish kid. My girlfriend and I were able to find a perfect match near her hometown. COVID-19 has delayed all wishes for now, but we are very excited to continue with our first wish kid. It is fun to check in and give him TOY (Thinking of You) gifts to remind him how much we care about him and his wish. He is 8, and he wished to go to Hawaii with his family. He had never flew in a plane and was very excited at the thought of swimming with dolphins. I am proud to volunteer for such a great cause I can continue to give to the rest of my life. It will be fun to see where this journey takes me.
